Tribute

Dudley Kirk Chism passed away peacefully on November 29, 2023 leaving a legacy through the fullness of his life.

Dudley was born July 2, 1930 in Pomona, MD (near Chestertown), and moved to Baltimore in 1933.  Dudley was the son of Edward Kirk Chism and Mary Wrightson Chism, now deceased.  His older sisters, Kathrine Chism White, and Nancy Pearl Sammeck, (Worthington) also deceased, lived in Naples, FL. Dudley married Virginia Lee Poggioli in June of 1963. Ginny and Dudley had 2 sons, Steven Kirk Chism, now deceased, and Jeffrey Kirk Chism.

Dudley graduated from City High School in 1949, Baltimore Junior College in 1952, and the University of Baltimore in 1954. He lettered in baseball and football in college, playing football and baseball at BJC and baseball at University of Baltimore in the Mason Dixon Conference.

He served 2 years in the U.S Army at Fort Hood, TX during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956 and went to work in Baltimore at Lord Baltimore Press, a large printing company, later bought by International Paper, where he worked for 19 years, and rose to becoming Printing Manager and Plant Manager.  In 1975 he became Plant Manager at Field Container in Elk Grove, Illinois for 4 years. He then moved to become Plant Manager for Manville Forest Products for 10 years in Madison, WI, until his retirement in 1989 when he and Virginia moved to Naples, FL.

Dudley assumed presidency of Lely Country Club Homeowners Association, a position he held for 13 years. He improved the community by working with county staff on the wastewater treatment plant relocation, speed calming 1st Andrews Blvd., and numerous other projects spanning 20 years. He was a good friend and confidant to the late Jim Mudd and Donna Filia of the county staff.

As an enthusiast of sports, he became a talented umpire and joined Collier Umpires Association. Dudley has umpired softball and tennis (USTA) events since 1992, notably umpiring events featuring Jimmy Connors, John Borge, John McEnroe, Martina Navratolva, Jim Courier, etc. as well as many regional tennis and softball events in Collier County.  He endeared himself to many friends at these locations.

His greatest legacy of love and laughter lives on through his family. Dudley and Ginny recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.  They spent those years building a beautiful family together, creating meaningful friendships, and enjoying an active and full lifetime. They have visited Alaska, Great Britian, Honduras, Spain, France, and most of the Caribbean Islands during many of the cruises they were fortunate to have taken.

Dudley is survived by numerous family members, including his wife Virginia, his son, Jeff Kirk, daughter-in-law, Sheryl, and their children, Kasey Kirk, Sabrina, and Cassandra, as well as his three great-grandchildren, Matthias Kirk, Kirk Kimble, and Liam John, along with his first great-granddaughter on the way. Jeff received his medical degree from Barry University in Miami and received his doctorate degree in Podiatric medicine.   He moved to Wisconsin in 1997 and set up practice there where he still resides and practices medicine. Their family created a 240-acre ranch which has aptly been named the “Chism Trail Ranch.”

Dudley leaves behind many friends he has worked with and befriended over the last 93 years.  He never seemed to meet a stranger and was always there to share a smile, a story, lend a hand or offer an embrace.

Dudley will be truly missed.  A memorial service has been planned to honor him at Fuller Funeral Home EAST Naples on December 8th, 2023 from 2:00- 3:00 PM.
