Tribute

Erlinda (“Ellen”) Herrera (née Buenviaje) died peacefully in her home on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the age of 87. After living in Piedmont, California for 40 years, she moved to Naples, Florida in 2022 to be close to her family. Ellen was born to Leopoldo Buenviaje and Theodora (née Abutin) in the Philippines on May 30, 1935. She is pre deceased by her loving husband, David Herrera. She leaves behind her brother Paul; her sister, Grace; her children, Bernaline Margand (John), Peony Herrera, and Nicomedes (Laura) Herrera; and her ten grandchildren, Joseph Margand, Marie-Thérèse Margand, Bernadette Margand, Gabrielle Margand, Adelina Margand, David Margand, John-Paul Margand, Daniel Herrera, Thaddeus Herrera, and Nathan Herrera.

Ellen lived an adventurous life. She left her home country at a young age and served as a missionary nurse in Haiti’s lower Artibonite Valley for five years, at the Albert Schweitzer hospital. She then came to the United States, working in Chicago and New Jersey before settling into her long-time position as a surgical nurse at Doctors’ Hospital of San Leandro in Northern California. Ellen enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, traveling the world,  and working in her garden. She particularly enjoyed taking cruises with her husband, and with her many extended family members and friends through the Philippines Nurses Association. Above all, Ellen was devoted to God. She prayed the Holy Rosary daily. Her last words summarize her legacy: “I love everybody!”
