Eugene (Gene) Jack Harris, 85, of Naples, Florida, passed away on January 3, 2021 in his home surrounded by his family. Gene was born on the south side of Chicago, Illinois and was the beloved husband of Beatrice Sue for nearly 62 years. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and five grandchildren. Annual road trips from Florida to the Midwest to visit family and friends were not complete without stopovers on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, fried mush from Bob Evans and sliders from White Castles.
He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1954, and rose to the rank of sergeant before being honorably discharged. After completing his military service, he enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, and later transferred to the University of Illinois where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1962. He remained an enthusiastic Illini fan.
He built a successful career in finance and management working with various companies which took him and his family to many different states. He cultivated many lifelong friendships along the way.
Gene was an avid sportsman and a passionate golfer. He ran nine marathons, plus five Minnesota Border-to-Border Triathlons, numerous century bike rides and Peachtree Road Races. Gene was a former member of the Royal Palm Golf Club in Naples. He organized various golf leagues and enjoyed the camaraderie of good friends. He golfed weekly with his wife and celebrated many joyous occasions at the club.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene A. and Dolores Elizabeth Harris; brother, Dan Harris; sister, Donna Murphy; uncle, Glenn Harris. Surviving relatives include his wife, Beatrice Sue; four children, Tom (Diane), Debbie (C. V.), John (Petra), Holly (Jeff); five granddaughters, Lindsey, Gwynn (Louis), Emily, Lauren (Matthew), Jenna; sister, Diane Donohue; brother-in-law, Jeff Murphy; niece and nephews, Lisa, Scott, Sean, Eamon, Matthew.
Memorial services will be planned for later in the year. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity.
