Her grandfather was a pastor and growing up she learned the value of giving to others. At the age of twelve, Evelyn traveled to New York to see her mother, and it was during this trip that she was captivated by the sights and sounds of the World Fair and discovered her love for travelling and adventure. Soon after she moved to Atlanta, GA where she married her high school sweetheart Donald Walter Glenn and had her four children.
Evelyn was a born leader. Throughout her life, Evelyn was determined to participate in and contribute to the communities in which she was immersed and was passionately devoted to. She was involved with many organizations and charities. Evelyn was the president of the Woman’s Club in Atlanta, Washington DC, Parkersburg. WV and Macro Island. She also became Mrs. Dogwood Queen of Atlanta, Georgia.
One of her most significant moments of her life was when she met the love of her life her second husband William “Mickey” McDowell who she was married to for almost fifty years. The couple moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia, to purchase a Pepsi Cola bottling Facility. The twelve years they lived there were spent developing longstanding relationships and helping develop local organizations such as the Arts Center and the Woman’s Club of Parkersburg.
It wasn’t until Evelyn discovered Marco Island that she truly found her home. Quickly becoming involved, she joined the Marco Island Woman’s Club in 1984, serving as president for two years and is the longest standing member. Evelyn also was deeply involved with the Hideaway Beach Club.
Together, Evelyn and Mickey lived an adventure-filed life travelling to every continent on earth, taking dozens of cruises, enjoying numerous safaris and wilderness adventures, and visiting many countries. Their favorite travel destinations were Las Vegas; Hong Kong; Shanghai, China; and Africa. When asked if there was anything else she wanted to accomplish in her life, she said “there isn’t a single thing left to do that I haven’t wanted to do.”
In her spare time, Evelyn loved to play bridge where she became a Life Master. She also enjoyed golf, tennis and following and attending her favorite sports team the Washington Redskins. Despite all her accomplishments, when asked what her favorite part of her life was, she simply said “my children.”
