Lifelong Florida resident Samuel Benjamin Caruthers Sr., 90, passed away on June 17, 2021 in Naples, Fl. He was born in 1931 in Pahokee, Fl. to Joseph and Evelyn Caruthers. He attended Andrew Jackson high School in Miami, Fl. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Wheatear during the Korean war. After the war he joined the Naples police department, attended the FBI national training academy, and served as Chief of Police from 1958 to 1965. He was a Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Deputy until he retired in 1990 after 24 years of service. He and his wife, Lorene, returned to Naples in 1990 where they enjoyed family and friends as well as gardening and fishing.
He is survived by his children, Carol (Tom) Haley, Sam Caruthers Jr., Joe (Kim) Caruthers, and daughter-in-law Laura Caruthers. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lorene and his son Alan. He was known as papa to his grandchildren Dori Yarris, Benjamin Caruthers, Sarah Caruthers, and Samuel Caruthers III. There will be a memorial service at Fuller East Funeral Home Thursday June 24th at 11AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in his name to Avow hospice in Naples.
