Shirley M. Jurek, 88, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2021. She touched all with her love and laughter and held her family and friends close to her heart. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Robert Jurek, her children Mark (Sandi) Jurek of Naples, Cindy (Dennis) Davis of Lake City, Jeanette (Mike) Miller of Tampa and Judy (Regan) Robinson of Rockport, TX, and her brother Art Mamott of Tallahassee. She cherished her nine grandchildren and their spouses Sarah (Jurek) and Matt Spahlinger, Stephen and Natalie Jurek, Lindsey (Davis) and Sean McCue, Kelly (Davis) and Alex Guerra, Jesse Miller, Gage and Leslie Robinson, Bailey Robinson and Abigail Robinson. She was an adoring great grandmother to Delta, Dean, Tommy, Jocelyn, Arabella and Angelo with two more on the way. She is preceded in death by her grandson Dennis Davis, Jr. Family was everything.
Shirley was born to Leona and Walter Mamott in Buffalo, NY. She discovered her love of water in high school participating in synchronized swimming and lettering in multiple sports. She met the love of her life at a church picnic when Bob used a squirt gun to grab her attention – and he kept it ever since. They married on October 1, 1955. The following year she joined Bob in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he was stationed in the Navy and where their first child, Mark, was born. Bob and Shirley returned to Swormville, NY, where Cindy, Jeanette and Judy were born. Shirley was active with the Swormville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and busy raising a family.
In 1974, the family left the cold winters of New York moving to Isles of Capri. Shirley worked for the Naples Daily News as an office manager at the Marco Island branch for more than 20 years. She was active in several clubs and organizations including the Marco Island Alumni Club, Island Arts & Entertainment Group, Newcomers Club and Just Friends. She loved to socialize with her high school sorority sisters, friends from Naples Daily News, her “lunch bunch” and art groups. Shirley never wanted to miss a party or gathering making friends wherever she went.
She will be remembered for her beautiful paintings and artistic projects, competitive pool volleyball games (her team always won), family Easter egg coloring and magic table, pool parties, Thanksgiving traditions and her love for jewelry and everything bedazzled.
Funeral services will be held privately with family. For those wanting to honor her memory, a loving donation can be made to Naples Botanical Gardens.
