Susan Mary Range

September 7, 1961 ~ January 10, 2024 (age 62) 62 Years Old


Susan Range passed away peacefully at home in the afternoon of January 10th, 2024. She was born on September 7, 1961 in Chicago to Charles and Mary Joan Range. She was the middle of seven children. She attended Christ the King and Morgan Park Academy for elementary school and Carl Sandburg High School where she was an officer in the Orchesis Dance Club and participated in various sports teams including tennis and track. Her love for tennis continued through her entire life. She went to college at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana where she studied economics and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta with her sisters. Susan had a successful career in telecom sales at MCI and Contel after graduation.

Susan married Stuart Miller in the late 80s and refocused her career on raising their two children, Austin and Haley Miller. She took great joy in being a mother and described it as having a second childhood. Later in life, she loved being a grandmother to Austin’s two young children.

Susan was a prolific artist. She took classes at Parsons School of Design when she lived in New York City. She had a tremendous artistic output consisting of abstract paintings, jewelry, sculpture, and neon among others. She loved spending time creating art and developing lifelong friendships at her studio at Greenleaf Art Center in Rogers Park. She was a substitute art teacher at Joseph Sears School.

Susan volunteered with Lawrence Hall when she lived in Chicago. She spent time with their clients, shopping for them, showing them how to keep house and helping them apply to jobs. She also volunteered with the Christ Church rummage sale in Winnetka often.

Susie was known for the depth of her kindness and elan. She could make a friend of anybody and fostered a community of people who cared for her wherever she went. She loved art, disco music, dancing, tennis, colorful language, her siblings and her children. She spent much of her free time traveling the globe with friends, family and her parish. She enjoyed live music and went to Lollapalooza every summer she could.

The deceased is survived by her son Austin Miller and daughter-in-law Heather Miller; her daughter Haley Miller; her grandchildren Parker Miller and Kent Miller; her siblings Margaret Maybell, Mary Grace Range, Elizabeth Kiely, Anne Barclay and Benjamin Range; and many loving siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church at 784 Sheridan Road in Winnetka, IL at 10am on Friday, February 2nd, 2024, followed by a reception for family and friends at Indian Hill Club.
